Southend United have been without a manager since the resignation of Kevin Bond on the 6th of September. Gary Waddock has been the caretaker boss since the vacation of the hot seat. Rumours have been swirling about who will take over at Roots Hall and it looks as though Dirk Kuyt is in the running for a role in the new look Shrimpers setup. According to the Southend Echo, Henrik Larsson is being eyed up to take the top job with Dirk Kuyt to arrive at Southend United as his assistant.
Kuyt is a cult hero at Anfield. The Dutchman arrived on Merseyside in 2006 and enjoyed 6 seasons of adulation before leaving for Fenerbahce in 2012. Who will ever forget his 1 yard hat-trick against Manchester United? He won the hearts of Kopites with his work rate and evident love for the club. He will always be fondly remembered by Reds fans.
Henrik Larsson is regarded as one of Celtic’s greatest ever strikers. He scored 242 goals in 313 games for the Glasgow side before moving to Barcelona and later, Manchester United.
Dirk Kuyt faces a huge task at Southend United should he join the management set up. The Shrimpers have notched only 4 points in their opening 12 games and despite it being early in the season, they are staring relegation to League Two in the face. The side have conceded the most goals in the division, bringing in a couple of legendary strikers in may seem like an odd choice given the circumstances, however, they could go for the 13/14 Liverpool tactic of ‘just make sure you score one more’.
Fingers crossed Dirk Kuyt enjoys his time at Southend should he take up the job, if him and Henrik do well, maybe we’ll even see him back in the dugout at Anfield one day.
