Liverpool defender Joel Matip has been named the Premier League Player of the Month.
The Cameroon international beat competition from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Callum Wilson, Ricardo Pereira, Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez to claim the prize. And it was a landslide victory for Matip who picked up 41% of all votes to be named September’s PFA Player of the Month.
The defender was the only Liverpool player nominated for the award despite the side’s perfect start to the season.

Liverpool picked up three wins during the month of September to continue their perfect start to the Premier League campaign.
In reality the shortlist for this award should have been dominated by Liverpool players who have looked a cut above the rest so far.
The Reds’ front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah have all looked more impressive than any other player on that list. While Jurgen Klopp’s full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson have both looked phenomenal throughout the month.
Eventual winner Matip is deserved but should have been surrounded by his Liverpool comrades. Currently sidelined with injury, he has been a massive miss for Liverpool who have shipped four goals in two games.
The Reds fans will be hoping he will return in time to face Manchester United in a couple of weeks.
