The Reds squad has come on leaps and bounds under the stewardship of Jürgen Klopp and Michael Edwards. The Liverpool first team is unrecognisable from that of 5 seasons ago, shrewd purchases have paid off and the progression of Trent Alexander-Arnold has been phenomenal to see. Anfield’s team is so strong now that pundit Jason Cundy believes that one of Klopp’s backup players would start in the Man City first team: Joe Gomez.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Cundy said: “They have better players…even the backup is better than what Manchester City have…Joe Gomez is Liverpool’s third choice centre-back…but he is better than the defenders Man City have fit right now.”
He’s definitely not wrong. The English centre half was in impassable form last season before his campaign was cut short by a horror tackle against Burnley. He has recovered from the broken leg he sustained during the game but he has found his place in the first team filled by Joel Matip. The Cameroonian was crucial to the Reds’ Champions League victory in Madrid, he quickly established a steadfast rapport with talisman Virgil van Dijk – as such Gomez must bide his time before he is put back in the starting berth.
In the long term, Joe Gomez will be at the heart of the Liverpool defence. He is still a very raw player owing to his age. Playing deputy to Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip will be vital to his development. In the future he is nailed on to be a world class centre back, starting for Liverpool week in, week out.
