England's defensive embarrassment means Gomez must start in future

Kosovo made their debut in the UEFA European Championship this year.

This year. The minnows somehow managed to score three goals at Wembley last night as they succumbed to a 5-3 defeat against England. Against top opposition, the attack won’t be able to spare the blushes of the awful England defence. Up step Joe Gomez.

In England’s two qualifiers this international break, Gareth Southgate opted for a centre back pairing of Harry Maguire and Michael Keane. In England’s second game, this pairing turned in a performance that Sunday league teams would be ashamed of.

The misery began when Jordan Henderson rifled a pass into Michael Keane’s feet. The overpriced Everton man panicked and could not deal with the ball, he lost it on the edge of his area to allow Valon Berisha in for Kosovo’s opener after 36 seconds.

It got worse after the break. Declan Rice played a careless pass in the middle and Kosovo were in, Henderson bust a gut to get back and cover from midfield but was unable to intercept a ball that eventually reached Berisha for his second goal. Keane should have been there with Berisha.

Perhaps the most unforgivable of the goals was the penalty. Harry Maguire, world record fee for a defender Harry Maguire, chopped down Verdat Muriqi. The foul was so bizarre, it wasn’t even close – it was brash and unforgivable.

Raphinha, Coutinho and Tielemans: The signings Liverpool could make this summer

With the pair demonstrating that they can’t hold their own at the (not even) highest level. Gareth Southgate must be forced into a change. Joe Gomez is head and shoulders above the pair and is playing alongside the world’s best at Liverpool. It is time to install Gomez into the England defence and let him lead it.
