An Italian journalist has claimed that Liverpool are in talks with Sadio Mane with a view to extending his current deal until he is 33. The new deal would bump his wages up to a massive €250k a week. La Gazzetta dello Sport contributor Nicolo Schira tweeted the news:

Signing the Senegalese winger up to a new long term deal would be a massive show of strength and ambition by the club. The forward, now 27, has been in scintillating form for the Reds this season. Last time out, Mane picked up the golden boot alongside his teammate Mo Salah.

As they always do when players are winning golden boots, rumours have been suggesting that Spanish giants Real Madrid have been sniffing around Liverpool’s electric winger. A key step to preventing the loss of Sadio Mane would be getting him to put pen to paper on an attractive long term contract. During a time when Spurs look set to lose their talismanic midfielder Christian Eriksen on a free transfer, it is vital that Liverpool ensure all our key stars are on long deals with financial packages that will stop their heads being turned by the fiscal muscle of Madrid.

The Sadio Mane contract is also a signal of the Reds’ future ambitions in the transfer market. With the club committing their current first choice winger to such a long contract, they may not look to spend big on another first team wide player. There have been rumours that Liverpool are going to make a move for England international Jadon Sancho. If Mane does indeed sign this bumper new deal then the Reds are either not pursuing Sancho or they have a lot more financial capability than we thought.
