This weekend sees Liverpool v Newcastle played out again, one of the Premier League’s most entertaining fixtures. However, the importance of the game stretches beyond settling old scores and Liverpool extending their 100% start.
Reds winger Sadio Mane is on course to reach an incredible milestone that no other Premier League player has come close to yet. If the Senegalese forward plays as expected this weekend, and his side avoid defeat, he will become the first player in Premier League history to go 50 games unbeaten at a single stadium for a single club. Mane has already reached 50 games unbeaten at Anfield, however, one of those games was for Southampton.
The stat is indicative of just how important the winger is to this Liverpool side. Since his £34m switch from Southampton in 2016, he has become one of the first names on the team sheet for Jürgen Klopp. When Sadio plays at home, we just don’t lose.
The electric forward has been in hot form this year. He has managed 2 goals and an assist in 3 starts in the Premier League this season. The Senegal man will be integral to any silverware that Liverpool pick up this campaign. He is my tip for Liverpool’s player of the season and I firmly believe he will pip the competition to the golden boot, though this is banking on an inevitable injury lay-off for Sergio Aguero. Even if the Argentinian does manage to stay fit, it will be a battle to the death between the pair. Mane will be intent on retaining his award and claiming more than just a third of the honour this time round.
