A Joel Matip contract extension is great news for Liverpool fans. The Daily Mirror have reported, among others, that the Cameroonian international has had his deal extended by a year.

The Cameroonian’s current contract was set to expire at the end of this season. The Reds have triggered a clause in Matip’s contract that will keep the defender at Anfield until the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

Virgil Van Dijk’s centre-half partner has thoroughly earned his extension. The towering defender was pivotal to Liverpool’s title challenge and legendary Champions League campaign.

Joel Matip has managed to keep his place in the Liverpool side in recent weeks. There was much doubt over the summer as to whether the Cameroonian would be in Jürgen Klopp’s starting XI as Joe Gomez returned from injury. Matip had been in and out of the Anfield side since arriving from Schalke in 2016. A broken leg for Gomez thrust the German born player into the Reds team and he never looked back.

He has gone from strength to strength since appearing regularly alongside Van Dijk. Although, Big Virg could make any partner look like Paolo Maldini, the former Schalke man has actually looked the stronger of the pair at times in 2019. Virgil doesn’t have bad games, sometimes he has very good games and Matip has incredible games. With the defender set to stay with the club for at least another two years, let’s hope these incredible games keep coming.
