Three things that hold Liverpool back in the transfer market

As fans, are we too optimistic?

There used to be a time where players would hear that Liverpool were after them and they would jump at the chance to join us. They still do, but not the top players. We were a top team and quality players would love to sign for us. Have times changed?

This summer saw us try to sign Bayern Munich attacking-midfielder Mario Gotze. We came close but apparently turned him down because he wanted to wait his time and see the offer from Dortmund. Personally, I think this was the leaked version of events to stop the meltdown from the fans, when in reality it was either the offer wasn’t lucrative enough or the idea of going back to Dortmund was more appealing.

As a fan, it’s really frustrating to watch. I understand that players want to play amongst Europe’s elite in the Champions League but, hopefully, Klopp will be able to return us back to the elite European tournament and we will be able to sign these top players with ease. But in this day and age, money talks. It’s not ideal but we have to take a risk and break the mould at some point.

Altogether, it’s hard to say where the problem lies with the clubs transfer dealings. Matip, Karius and Klavan weren’t players that were found by the scouting team. They were all signings Klopp already knew about. Then there’s Mané, a player the gaffer has had his eye on for several years. So, you can’t blame the scouting team for the signings this summer, we can’t judge them just yet anyway! But I think it’s safe to say the targets this year were guys that Klopp already knew about and wanted, but finding the top talent wouldn’t go awry, that’s for sure.

Jürgen apparently has full control over transfers, but the rejection of Hector and targeting someone like Dahoud smells like FSG action. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they still have a big say on the incoming players. Then there’s us being too optimistic. It’s too early in Klopp’s reign to get bothered about big name signings not coming in. Apparently, we won’t spend big money for the sake of it, but if a top player was available at the right price I’m pretty certain Klopp would explore it.
