My first reaction when I was scrolling through my Twitter feed and stumbled upon hysterical Liverpool supporters claiming that Götze is on his way to Anfield was one of amusement. This wouldn’t be the first time that Liverpool supporters have got ahead of ourselves.
However, once I’d had a chuckle at some of the ridiculous tweets I began to imagine a front line of Coutinho, Firmino, Sturridge and Götze. Plus whatever other quality Klopp brings in as you’re sure he will.
It was always expected that Jürgen Klopp might turn to the Bundesliga when boosting Liverpool’s ranks. There was never any sort of realistic expectation that he might look to sign players of Götze’s grade. The two Germans worked together during their time at Borussia Dortmund.
Götze would slot in seamlessly into an attacking line that features Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge. Imagining the link up play makes all my other problems fade away. When Götze was at Dortmund there was beautiful interplay between him and Marco Reus – another one of Liverpool supporters’ dream signings.
Below is a clip of what Götze can do.
The little German is surprisingly strong and can ride a challenge without being crumpled like the blocks in Jenga. His close dribbling is unreal and his finishing is really good for a midfielder. He can be a bit stingy but players of his quality often are.
For some time there has been doubt over whether or not Götze will be at Bayern Munich for much longer. Pep Guardiola hasn’t given him much game time and despite the Spaniard being due in Manchester in the summer it is unlikely that Götze’s fortunes will change when he leaves.
Of course rumours have only been intensified by reports that when asked about contact from Liverpool Götze merely replied,”You should ask Jürgen.” This may just be fuel to the fire but hey, where there’s smoke there’s fire.
