Liverpool fans explain why they’re against signing Alex Scott from Bournemouth

It is not surprising to see Alex Scott being mooted to join Liverpool this summer, given the obvious link to Andoni Iraola.

The midfielder played a key role in Bournemouth securing their highest-ever Premier League finish and European football.

Scott to Liverpool has since become a talking point in the last month or so, and there are suggestions he is valued at £80m.

Reds fans do not have a problem with that potential price tag, but a number are questioning what he offers that Iraola’s current options don’t?

Alex Scott is too similar to Liverpool’s current midfielders

There is no question that the Merseyside outfit should be on the lookout for reinforcements in the centre of the park this summer.

Steven Gerrard wants a proper defensive midfielder signed, while Wayne Rooney has already highlighted that Liverpool’s midfield is a problem area.

But when reacting to talk around Scott joining, many fans claimed they don’t need the Bournemouth ace, as he is just like Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenberch and more:

• “We need a defensive midfielder. Not another attacking midfielder. Got too many of them.”
• “Explain to me what kind of skillset does Scott have that Grav, Jones and Szo don’t?”
• “Good player, but is he not similar to what we already have?”
• “Is he the right profile of midfield player we need tho… whose place does he take in the starting XI?”
• “Let’s see. Liverpool: Jones, Endo, Allister, Gravenberch, Szoboszlai. Where does Scott fit in?”
• “We have players like him already”
• “Scott is good, but we have Grav, Jones, Macca and Nyoni as 8s – Grav and Nyoni same style as Scott – why should we be interested in. We need a DLP/6, not another carrier.”

It is easy to see why supporters are not completely sold on the Scott addition, given how similar a player he is to Jones.

If Liverpool do decide to pay Bournemouth’s £80m asking price, he would probably take the Englishman’s place in the midfield pecking order.

However, while Scott may be slightly better defensively, Jones looks a better passer and loses the ball less.

In turn, it may make more sense to keep hold of Jones, extend his contract beyond 2027 and spend the transfer funds that could have been used on Scott on an actual defensive midfielder.
