Rio Ngumoha may have stolen the spotlight in 2025/26, but Trey Nyoni is another bright young talent emerging from the youth ranks at Anfield.
Liverpool plan to give Nyoni a chance in pre-season, but there have been rumours circulating this week that he could spend next season out on loan.
A move to the Championship has been mooted, with Swansea City named as a potential destination. But this has not gone down well with fans.
Which Liverpool youngster will make the biggest impact under Andoni Iraola and become a first-team member?
Four really talented young players…
Liverpool fans unhappy with suggestion Trey Nyoni could be loaned out
Just some of the reaction to the rumour can be seen below, with one fan going as far as to say that letting Nyoni leave would be ‘extremely stupid’:
- “Man that’s sad. Really hoped Iraola would keep him.”
- “I can’t believe my eyes. No one is blaming the coach for something like this.”
- “I hope this is not true. This boy should be in our starting lineup for some games next season.”
- “Do not loan out this kid, he’s better than many of our senior midfielders.”
- “I would be absolutely raging if this happened.”
- “No deal 100% keep him and give him a lot of game time, will save this club millions.”
- “Would be extremely stupid.”
Nyoni made six Premier League appearances last season, but those outings only added up to 21 minutes of playing time.
Why Liverpool hopefully won’t loan out Trey Nyoni
However, it is worth remembering that Arne Slot was in charge at the time, and his track record with youth players during his Anfield spell was poor.
Slot was criticised for his use of youngsters last season, and a lack of minutes for Nyoni was a prime example of this.
Liverpool’s midfield was severely lacking in quality depth last season thanks to Dominik Szoboszlai needing to play at right-back, Wataru Endo picking up a long-term injury and Curtis Jones showing he was unable to perform at a high enough level on a consistent basis to warrant starting regularly.
This meant that Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister had to play the majority of minutes last season, even though the latter had a poor campaign at club level.
Yet, Nyoni still wasn’t given a proper run in the team, something fans should expect to change in 2026/27.
Iraola has a great record working with youngsters, and as we saw at Bournemouth, he is more than happy to give less proven talent a chance to shine.
Moreover, if Jones leaves this summer, which may well still happen, Liverpool will have even less depth in the centre of the park.
So, while Championship clubs are no doubt looking at some of the Reds’ young players, like Nyoni, it would be very surprising if he left this summer.
