Liverpool players have been getting used to working under Andoni Iraola this week as they prepare for the start of the new season.
As it is a World Cup year, Iraola’s start to life at Anfield has been slightly disrupted, with limited numbers of the first-team Liverpool squad available to train this July.
Alexis Mac Allister and new signing Victor Munoz will face off in the World Cup final this Sunday, with all six of Liverpool‘s other representatives having been knocked out already.
What has been holding Alexis Mac Allister back at Liverpool recently?
Maybe Andoni Iraola can get more out of him 🤔
Under new FIFA regulations, all players must have at least three weeks off before they return to their clubs, and working under that proviso, Liverpool fans can expect to see Florian Wirtz come back next, swiftly followed by a handful of other big names.
Wirtz should be back after the weekend
Wirtz will need a big season with Liverpool if he is to shake off doubts over his suitability in the Premier League.
As a result, Germany exiting the World Cup much earlier than expected could actually work in his – and Liverpool’s – favour, as he gets to grips with a more intense style of play under Iraola.
The Germans were surprisingly beaten by Paraguay on June 29th, which, if he takes the allotted three weeks, should see Wirtz return to training on Monday July 20th. Hopefully that will be in time to jet off to the USA with the rest of his teammates ahead of the first pre-season friendly against Sunderland in Nashville on July 25th.

Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, knocked out by Morocco while playing for the Netherlands one day after Germany’s defeat, should be scheduled to return on Tuesday July 21st.
The same day could also see the arrival of Alexander Isak, whose Sweden team were also beaten by France on June 30th.
Alisson Becker may be another to come back next week, although working on the three-week guide, the Brazilian is not technically due back until Sunday, when Liverpool will already be in the US.
There is a chance that some or all of these players take slightly longer to come back – or return a little ahead of schedule if they so choose – but if all goes by the book, it will be Wirtz on Monday followed by Van Dijk, Gakpo, Gravenberch and Isak on Tuesday.
