It is fair to say that Cody Gakpo was not among the most popular players at Anfield during the 2025/26 season.

Liverpool fans criticised Gakpo on multiple occasions throughout the campaign, amid it looking like then-manager Arne Slot would pick the winger no matter his form.

That even prompted one pundit to tell supporters to leave the Dutchman alone. But now he has been named as a key target for Tottenham Hotspur, some of the Reds faithful are actually against him leaving.

Some Liverpool fans don’t want Cody Gakpo to leave

It has emerged over the weekend that while Spurs have made the former PSV man a priority, Liverpool are not thought to be open to a sale at present.

Had this report come out a few months ago, it probably would have been met with much disdain from the fanbase, given how much stick the attacker was getting.

But as shown by the reaction below, it seems many would actually now be sad to see Gakpo depart.

The downside of Cody Gakpo staying at Liverpool

But should Gakpo indeed stay, there may be a concern that he gets in the way of Rio Ngumoha playing more.

Victor Munoz has already arrived this summer at the request of Andoni Iraola, and he is a natural left winger like Gakpo.

Munoz can play off the right, and the Dutch forward could be used as the back-up striker while Hugo Ekitike is out.

But it may be the case that come January/February 2027, Ngumoha is the third-choice left winger, which would not be ideal.
