Arne Slot shackles obliterated as Liverpool players make collective World Cup history

The Liverpool players at the World Cup are proving that they can still perform at the highest level despite a terrible season under Arne Slot.

There were times during the 2025/26 campaign when it had looked as though the whole Liverpool squad were suffering from a form of amnesia which made them forget they were elite footballers.

Though that may still take some shaking off for some under Andoni Iraola, the Reds’ players at the ongoing World Cup are making their mark and showing their true selves on the world stage. Collectively, the seven Liverpool stars out in the USA, Canada & Mexico have registered more assists than any single team has managed since records began in 1966.

Liverpool players are the top creative World Cup forces

After Wataru Endo withdrew from Japan’s squad at the last minute through injury, there were only seven Liverpool players at the World Cup when the tournament began.

Though that feels like fewer than usual, all of the seven are regular starters for their nations, and have been racking up goals and assists right from the first whistle.

In fact, as statistician Michael Reid pointed out on X on Friday, Liverpool players (including Mohamed Salah who is still technically employed by the Reds), have hit 11 assists in the tournament so far, which is the most of any one team for 60 years of data.

“Liverpool players of 2025-26 have assisted 11 goals at this year’s World Cup – it’s the most ever by a single club side on record (from 1966) at a single men’s World Cup,” Reid remarked.

At the time of writing, Alexander Isak leads the way with three assists, followed by Florian Wirtz, Ryan Gravenberch and Salah on two, with Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk setting up one goal each.

Of the outfield players, only Alexis Mac Allister is yet to find a teammate to score, while Gakpo, Van Dijk and Isak have all found the net as well.

Though Salah will be taken away from this group by the time the knockout rounds begin, it is still an encouraging sign for Iraola that his players have remembered how to find their colleagues in dangerous positions and help their team score goals.

With all Liverpool players set to feature in the knockout stages, this number will surely only grow further, and with top target Yan Diomande also registering an assist for Ivory Coast, there is plenty to be hopeful about for Reds fans ahead of pre-season.
