Liverpool have picked their four ‘high quality’ wingers for next season but it just isn’t good enough

Liverpool’s wide options have been the subject of scrutiny heading into the season after a campaign in which they failed to deliver spectacularly.

It will be all change this summer, and the Reds have already seen Mohamed Salah depart and brought Spain forward Victor Munoz into the squad. Further surgery is expected as Liverpool continue to push for Yan Diomande.

In the meantime, Cody Gakpo has been linked with an exit, potentially opening the door to a deal for Bradley Barcola. According to The Athletic, though, Gakpo, Diomande and Munoz are three of the first-choice wide attackers Liverpool are planning the season with.

Name the five further signings Liverpool need to make after Victor Munoz this summer 👇

The Reds could reportedly target two forwards, two midfielders and a versatile defender…

Diomande, Gakpo, Munoz and Ngumoha are Liverpool’s options

Rewind to the days of Salah and Sadio Mane terrorizing opposition full-backs for Liverpool, and Reds fans did not have to worry about their wings for years.

Things are very different now, though, and this summer has already seen something of an overhaul in that department.

While the Gakpo and Barcola situation rumbles on, though, The Athletic have set Liverpool’s stance out neatly, claiming that the plan is for Andoni Iraola to count on a quartet of ‘high quality’ options out wide.

Diomande, Gakpo, Munoz and Ngumoha are named as these four players, with no mention of Barcola, or any other incoming attacker still to come.

Liverpool’s attack does not look strong enough

Give it two or three years and the three of Diomande, Munoz and Ngumoha could be one of the best on the planet.

However, for now, the reality is that these three players have just 132 senior appearances between them. Throw in Gakpo on the back of a terrible season, and this is slightly worrying for Liverpool.

Clearly, there are other options, with Alexander Isak in particular expected to carry a lot of the goal-scoring burden, but the Swede has been injury-prone since joining in 2025 and there is wariness that he may miss another chunk of football in 2026/27.

If that happens, and without the injured Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool do not necessarily look in a better position than they were last season.

Plenty will be expected of Diomande, especially given his likely £100m+ price-tag, but he is only 19, and there is no guarantee that he will hit the ground running.

How does Andoni Iraola get the Netherlands version of Cody Gakpo for Liverpool?

This is not the same player 😭

The same can be said of Munoz, while it would be inadvisable for Liverpool to burden Ngumoha with too much responsibility, despite his obvious quality.

That leaves Gakpo as the senior man, but if Iraola is relying on the Dutchman to replicate his international form at club level, then we’ve already seen how that is likely to go. Not well.

Liverpool must keep up Barcola pursuit

Though Liverpool’s options do look a little underwhelming for now, if you swap Gakpo for Barcola, it suddenly takes on a whole different aspect.

The Frenchman is a proven elite winger for fans to pin their hopes on as Diomande, Munoz and Ngumoha gather their experience.

Nothing is likely to happen in that regard unless Gakpo is sold, but given the other options at their disposal, that now looks necessary.

Further additions will be made this summer in other areas of the pitch to hopefully make Liverpool a much better team than they were last season. But when fans cast their eyes towards the top end of the pitch, this list, as it currently stands, is unlikely to fill them with too much excitement.
