Liverpool’s surprise move for Victor Munoz makes it obvious who their second winger signing is going to be

Liverpool are still looking to sign another winger this summer despite the imminent arrival of Osasuna’s Victor Munoz.

The Reds have moved quickly to sign Munoz, triggering his release clause from under the noses of Newcastle to make him their first arrival of the Andoni Iraola era.

More new additions are likely to follow, after claims from journalists that Liverpool want another wide forward to join Munoz.

How excited are you by Liverpool’s surprise signing of Victor Munoz?

And what do you think his role will be next season? Is he an immediate starter?

Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola are the two standout names who have been mentioned throughout the spring and summer so far, and although both would be terrific signings for Liverpool, it now looks clear that Diomande is the one who is going to join.

Yan Diomande will surely be Liverpool’s next winger addition

Liverpool have badly needed pace on the wings having seen their attack become one-paced under Arne Slot last season.

Munoz will certainly add that on the left side, where he is expected to battle with Rio Ngumoha for a starting spot. Where that leaves Cody Gakpo, who has been linked with a move away, remains to be seen.

What it does mean is that Iraola is well-stocked on the left, with the right now becoming a glaring priority.

Interestingly, it has been well reported that Liverpool see Diomande as a right-sided forward, and with that being the Ivorian’s preferred position, these assurances could be decisive when it comes to him making a call on his next club.

Barcola, meanwhile, is much more of a left-sider, and while it is possible that Liverpool recruit him to play on the right, it now looks much more probable that Diomande will be the player who ends up at Anfield next season.

Are there other options for Liverpool?

Although the signing of Munoz should not completely rule out a deal being done for Barcola as well, it would make little sense for Liverpool to buy a player who likes to play on the left and then deploy him on the right.

But although this makes Diomande the front-runner, it does not mean that his capture is a certainty.

The fee is going to be extraordinarily large if it is to be done, meaning Liverpool will surely be assessing other naturally right-sided options. Quite who these are, though, is difficult to pin down.

The only other name regularly put forward as a potential target ahead of the summer had been Anthony Gordon, but having since joined Barcelona, the Scouser is no longer on the market.

As with Munoz, Liverpool could move quickly and silently to buy a player who has not been linked at all, but with a dearth of top, available, left-footed or right-sided forwards around, no names really spring to mind.

Someone like Yankuba Minteh, perhaps, might be in the running, but Liverpool need someone they can really pin their hopes on, and the Brighton man is still a work in progress.

There are a handful of other possible options at a similar level to Minteh, including Bournemouth’s Rayan, but the Reds really do need a headline addition, and while it is not done for now, Diomande is starting to look like the really obvious choice.
