The 2026 World Cup is in full swing, and a number of Liverpool players will take to the field in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Alisson and more will all fancy their chances of lifting the trophy in July.

Meanwhile, Florian Wirtz is representing Germany at this summer’s tournament, and Philip Lahm has had high praise for the versatile midfielder ahead of his country’s competition getting underway.

Barcola vs Diomande! Which Liverpool transfer target are you most excited to watch at the World Cup?

Are there any other Reds targets you think will shine this summer?

Philip Lahm names Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz as Germany’s best player

Germany have been drawn in Group E and are the clear favourites to advance to the knockout stages, which this year begins with a Round of 32 due to the increased number of teams competing.

They face Curacao in their first World Cup game on Sunday before further meetings with the Ivory Coast on June 20 and Ecuador on June 25.

Germany’s performances at recent major tournaments have not been great, but one man who does know a thing or two about winning trophies is ex-national team player Lahm.

The Bayern Munich legend has shared his thoughts on the current national team players when speaking via his official TikTok account this week.

When doing so, he was asked to name the best player in the squad, and rather than picking someone like Jamal Musiala or Kai Havertz, he selected Liverpool star Wirtz.

Lahm said: “Florian Wirtz. He has taken the step from the Bundesliga to the Premier League with Liverpool.

“He’s had a difficult season, but I think his abilities are exceptional. I’m excited to watch him, and I hope he has a successful World Cup.”

Some Reds fans may not agree with such a big claim, given Wirtz only scored five and assisted four in the Premier League last season following a mega-money move from Bayer Leverkusen.

But he is traditionally much better for Germany, scoring 11 and assisting 11 in 41 matches prior to the 2026 World Cup getting underway.

Most of those games have seen Wirtz playing off the left, a position he has largely failed to impress in at Liverpool so far.
