Liverpool may not want Jeremie Frimpong as their main right-back next season

Jeremie Frimpong had a mixed first season at Liverpool following his transfer from Bayer Leverkusen.

The right-back was viewed by many as a direct replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold after he departed for Real Madrid.

But as well as suffering with injury issues, it became apparent that Frimpong struggled somewhat in the right-back role in a back-four, and there is now a feeling Liverpool may not want to start him in that position as often next season.

Jeremie Frimpong’s role at Liverpool questioned

Liverpool have, of course, sacked Arne Slot and replaced the Dutchman with Andoni Iraola.

But even when Slot was still at the club, Frimpong was already beginning to be used at right-back less frequently.

Dominik Szoboszlai was instead starting a lot of games out of position in the backline, with Curtis Jones also filling in at right-back on occasion.

Frimpong, meanwhile, started to be pushed further up the pitch in the right-wing role.

It remains to be seen what system Iraola will implement in 2026/27, but David Lynch has suggested that the Reds may not want the ex-Leverkusen talent as their main right-back in the coming season.

Speaking to Anfield Index, he said: “I think it’s important that they have a real go-to option there [right-back].

“You know, I don’t get the sense they want to be playing Frimpong there for the majority of the season. So, you know, they’ve got to do something to make it easier on him.”

Jamie Carragher has mooted a new position for Jeremie Frimpong

As mentioned, Frimpong was used as a winger on occasions under Slot in 2025/26.

And Jamie Carragher thinks the Dutchman should be Liverpool’s back-up winger option on the right next term.

He also suggested that the Merseyside outfit go out and sign a new right-back.

Speaking in April, he said: “Liverpool need a right-back, they have fudged a few things there, they gave Conor Bradley his chance, he got another injury.

“Jeremie Frimpong has done all right, actually. I think he has done OK. But for me, I think Frimpong should be the back-up right-winger to the one that we buy in the summer. And I think Conor Bradley can fight with a new right-back that comes in.”
