Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke has decided whether he wants to play for Liverpool after transfer talks

Liverpool will have to look elsewhere for a new centre-back this summer after seeing Jan Paul van Hecke choose to join Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds need to replace Ibrahima Konate before the start of the season, and as he entered the final year of his Brighton contract, the Reds reportedly saw Van Hecke as an option.

However, according to Dutch outlet Voetbal International, the 26-year-old has decided that he wants to join Spurs and only Spurs this summer, turning his nose up at Liverpool.

You can only pick ONE player for Liverpool to sign this summer, who is it?

Van Hecke only wants to join Spurs

After reports emerged towards the end of the season that Liverpool had been in contact with Van Hecke over a move to Anfield, it had started to feel possible that a transfer could happen.

The sacking of Arne Slot appears to have altered the Reds’ transfer targets somewhat, though, and links to the Netherlands international began to cool.

Just last week it was reported that Tottenham had bid for Van Hecke, and although Liverpool were still credited with an interest at the time, VI now claim that no other side are now in the running.

Van Hecke is said to have become ‘enthusiastic’ over a move to Tottenham following talks with his former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, and has reportedly decided that Spurs will be his next club.

The only thing missing is claimed to be an agreement with Brighton, who are notoriously tough negotiators.

The Seagulls have already rejected one bid – which VI claim amounts to ‘at least’ €50m – which seems fairly steep for a player with one year left on his contract.

Ultimately, we may never know just how serious Liverpool were about signing Van Hecke this summer, but as they search for a new partner for Virgil van Dijk, they at least know they can now strike the captain’s international colleague from their list.
