As Liverpool look to revamp their forward line under Andoni Iraola, Darwin Nunez has emerged as a surprise candidate.

Nunez left the Reds last summer after three mixed seasons on Merseyside, and had been expected to regain some confidence in the Saudi Pro League with Al Hilal.

However, things have not gone to plan for the Uruguayan, who was not registered for the second half of the season. As a result, Nunez is on the market this summer, and according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, he is keen on a return to Liverpool.

Liverpool ‘positioning themselves’ for Nunez reunion

Although Nunez’s Liverpool exit felt timely, the season without him made supporters notice what they’d lost with his sale.

Though his quality was sometimes lacking, Nunez was an extremely hard-working, fast forward, and his passion for the badge was never in question.

These three attributes were sorely lacking from any Liverpool player last season, and that has perhaps added a layer of nostalgia for those harking back to Nunez’s career in red.

And according to MD, there could yet be a reprieve for the 26-year-old. They claim that Liverpool, along with Newcastle, Chelsea and Barcelona are ‘positioning themselves’ to take advantage of Nunez’s falling out with Al Hilal.

It is claimed that the four clubs see him as a ‘low-cost option’, and there is a chance that he could even leave the Saudi club on a free transfer.

Nunez himself is said to be keen on a return to Liverpool, with his preference making things complicated for Barcelona, who are struggling in their bid to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid.

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso is reportedly interested in signing Nunez as competition for Joao Pedro at Chelsea, and Newcastle are trying to help out struggling signings Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

With Liverpool waiting for Hugo Ekitike’s injury return, the chance to sign Nunez on a free transfer is certainly one worth considering. Nevertheless, we’d still be amazed to see this one happen.
