Liverpool have a massive summer ahead, and Steve McManaman thinks they have already made a questionable decision before the window even opens.
The former Reds midfielder was outlining the challenge that now faces FSG after a miserable 2025/26 season at Liverpool. They need several additions, but McManaman also believes they must avoid losing players who can still contribute.
That is why he is so surprised Andy Robertson is being allowed to leave. The Scot is preparing to bring the curtain down on nine hugely successful years at Liverpool, but McManaman feels he still had more to give.
Why do you think Liverpool did not hand Mo a microphone during his Anfield farewell?
Surely he deserved the chance to say his piece!
Steve McManaman questions decision to let Andy Robertson leave Liverpool
Robertson is leaving Liverpool after nine outstanding years at Anfield, with the 32-year-old ready to open a new chapter in his career. It is an emotional exit, but also a practical problem for Liverpool.
The left-back has shown this season that he can still play at the top level, even if he is no longer the unstoppable force he was under Jurgen Klopp.
Speaking about Liverpool’s summer on ESPN, McManaman admitted he was taken aback by the decision.
He said: “They’ve got a huge summer ahead, haven’t they?
“We talk about Real Madrid having a huge summer. Liverpool have got a monstrous summer ahead, losing characters like Mo Salah and Andy Robertson particularly.

“I was really surprised to see him leaving.”
Robertson may not have been a long-term starter anymore, but he could still have been useful next season. His exit means Liverpool now need another left-back, adding to an already crowded summer to-do list.
McManaman on Curtis Jones, Alisson and Joe Gomez
Robertson’s departure has already been confirmed, and it has left McManaman worried about what could come next.
Liverpool are losing Salah, while Alisson Becker, Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones have all been linked with exits.
McManaman continued: “It looks as if Alisson will stay and I’m glad about that.
“And then there’s even mutterings that Joe Gomez might leave and even Curtis Jones, which I think will be awful because Liverpool don’t need to lose any more bodies.
“If anything, they need to bring in five or six. So massive, massive summer ahead for Liverpool.”
You can only pick ONE player for Liverpool to sign this summer, who is it?
Who should Richard Hughes be targeting above all…
Every senior player who goes out the door creates another job in the transfer market. Liverpool already need attacking reinforcements, midfield help, defensive depth and possibly a new goalkeeper depending on how the summer develops.
The last thing they need is to make more work for themselves.
McManaman clearly wants Liverpool to hold onto what they still have and build on top of it, rather than ripping apart a squad that already looks short.
