Andy Robertson had just one request for Jordan Henderson ahead of his final Liverpool outing against Brentford, but the former Reds captain was never likely to accept it.

Robertson’s farewell is set to be an emotional occasion, bringing an end to a remarkable nine-year spell at Anfield. The left-back has been one of the defining figures of Liverpool’s modern era, winning everything there is to win and playing a central role in the club’s greatest side of recent times.

The return of Henderson and Caoimhin Kelleher — two fantastic servants during their own time at Liverpool — only adds to the occasion.

FSG would be crazy to keep Arne Slot if Liverpool lose to Brentford… right?

Robertson and Henderson shared so much success together, but the Scot’s invitation for his old captain to share in the send-off was met with an understandable no.

Jordan Henderson said no to Andy Robertson’s ‘lap of thanks’ invitation

It’s now nearly three years since Henderson moved on from Liverpool. He’s now a key leadership figure at Brentford and still a highly valued member of the England squad.

Speaking to The Redmen TV, Robertson admitted he had spoken to his old pal before the Brentford game and asked him to join him for the lap of thanks.

“Said to Hendo ‘will you do the lap of thanks with me?’ Obviously he rejected that,” Robertson said.

“But no like he wants me to enjoy my moment I suppose. But obviously for me, they [Henderson and Kelleher] are two legends of the football club coming back.

“Hendo especially being captain of the trophies we won. I know the fans will give an amazing reception. He deserves that. It’ll be great to have him back at Anfield.”

Henderson could easily have accepted and nobody inside Anfield would have begrudged him that moment, but he did not want to take away from his former teammates.

Robertson deserves every bit of adulation that comes his way. He has been a stalwart of this Liverpool side, a relentless presence down the left and one of the biggest personalities in the dressing room.

It’s naturally sad to see him go, but the ties to Liverpool, the fans, and the players will no doubt endure.
