The Denzel Dumfries situation is ‘moving towards’ a deal and Liverpool are probably in the lead

Denzel Dumfries looks increasingly likely to leave Inter Milan, and there is a good chance Liverpool are his next club.

The Reds have had problems on the right side of the back four all season, with injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong leaving Arne Slot to rely on makeshift options far too often. Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones have done okay, but there is clearly a need for more depth.

That is why Liverpool have been looking at Dumfries, who has a £22m release clause in his current contract. Now, Fabrizio Romano says one Premier League club are edging towards triggering it.

Liverpool are likely the Premier League club ‘very interested’ in Denzel Dumfries

Dumfries has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time, and this latest update feels significant.

Speaking about the 30-year-old’s future on his YouTube channel, Romano claimed that one unnamed Premier League side are now pushing towards a possible deal.

He said: “We have to be very careful about Dumfries’ future, because I’m told that there is a Premier League club that is very interested. It is moving towards the idea of paying this clause. So, watch out.

“Dumfries is definitely one of the players potentially on the way out and the Premier League is very, very interested in him. We will reveal further details about this situation.”

That mystery club has to be Liverpool.

He has been tipped for a Merseysdie move as far back as January.

For a team lacking reliability and physical presence on that flank, Dumfries makes plenty of sense, and his experience in the deep end of the Champions League can only serve to benefit a dressing room that has not tasted much European success together.

The Dutch connection is also hard to ignore, while Inter’s interest in Jones could create room for a deal that suits both clubs.

Manchester United and Manchester City have also been watching the situation closely, so Liverpool may not be alone. But given the links over recent weeks, their clear need at right-back and the affordability of the release clause, it would be a shock if Liverpool were not the club Romano is referring to.

Right now, Dumfries to Anfield feels like one of the more realistic moves on the table.
