Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a move for Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen after failing to be convinced by Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Mamardashvili has come in for some criticism following a difficult debut season as Alisson Becker’s understudy, with Friday night’s 4-2 defeat against Aston Villa adding further doubts.
With Alisson probably leaving to join Juventus, Liverpool are set to need a new No. 1 next season, and though Mamardashvili has been seen as the heir apparent since his signing in 2024, Verbruggen is seemingly now emerging as an alternative option.
Who should be Liverpool’s No. 1 next season if Alisson leaves?
Have Mamardashvili's performances been enough for him to take the shirt?
Verbruggen could replace Alisson at Liverpool
According to TeamTALK, Liverpool intend to replace Alisson if he departs this summer, whether that is in buying a new starting keeper, or someone to challenge Mamardashvili for the No. 1 shirt.
The Georgian is said to remain highly regarded within the club, but there are still reportedly doubts that he is ready to take over from Alisson immediately.
Indeed, it is claimed that as things stand, the overarching feeling at Anfield is that Mamardashvili cannot yet step into the void left by Alisson’s departure.
As a result, Liverpool are claimed to be assessing the goalkeeping market ahead of the summer, and Verbruggen has emerged as a player on whom ‘significant work’ has already been done.

The Dutchman is said to be open to leaving Brighton for the right opportunity, with the Seagulls already plotting for Carl Rushworth to take his place as first-choice.
Tottenham and Bayern Munich are also reported to be keen on Verbruggen, but Manuel Neuer’s latest contract extension is said to have complicated matters in Munich, while a switch to Liverpool is claimed to be seen as majorly appealing to the 23-year-old.
In any case, the Reds will reportedly only allow Alisson to leave if they are completely confident in their plan to replace him.
That plan is now said to be accelerating, and could include Verbruggen, who will star alongside Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo and Jeremie Frimpong for the Netherlands at the upcoming World Cup.
