Arne Slot has overseen one of the worst seasons at Liverpool in recent memory, and the woes continued against Aston Villa.

The Merseyside outfit were beaten 4-2 by Unai Emery’s side, now suffering their joint-most Premier League losses since 2014/15 under Brendan Rodgers (12).

As expected, Slot has been asked about his position as manager in the wake of Friday’s fixture, but he gave a coy response and said, ‘it’s not about me’.

Arne Slot coy when asked about his position as Liverpool manager

According to BBC Sport, when quizzed on his position, the Dutchman stated: “It’s not about me it’s about us being disappointed with the result. I spoke yesterday on it, and that’s enough.

“Our focus is on the Brentford game and making sure we earn the support of the fans by starting the game aggressive and well.

“The culmination of the fan support and a good performance will lead us to what we want to achieve and that is qualifying for the Champions League.”

While Slot was coy, the current line the club are putting out is that Liverpool will stick with their current manager going into 2026/27.

This, of course, comes with former player Xabi Alonso still available and being linked to Chelsea.

What would it take for Liverpool to sack Arne Slot

After watching the Villa fixture on May 15, ex-Red Jermaine Pennant questioned FSG’s decision to keep backing Slot.

Liverpool fans, in general at least, are known for having a lot of patience and backing their manager for a long time.

But in Slot’s case, it is so easy to see why the majority of the fanbase no longer think that he is capable of turning things around.

However, as mentioned, there are no plans in place for the 47-year-old to be removed from his post.

Could Liverpool be forced to sack Slot if the Reds somehow fail to qualify for the Champions League this season? Maybe that is what would do it.

But that would require sixth-place Bournemouth winning their next two games and Liverpool losing to Brentford next week.

A loss for the Reds wouldn’t be that surprising, but the Cherries seeing off Manchester City, who they have beaten just once throughout history, does seem unlikely.
