Liverpool are still the kings of Europe in England as embarrassing Arsenal comparison demonstrates

Arsenal are in the Champions League final this season and that is no small achievement, but it does put into perspective how dominant Liverpool have been in Europe’s elite competition.

Mikel Arteta’s side have earned their place after a huge win over Atletico Madrid, with Bukayo Saka’s goal proving the difference on the night. It is a landmark moment for Arsenal, who are now preparing for just the second Champions League final in their history.

Their only previous appearance came in 2006, when they lost to Barcelona in Paris. And it’s not just the Gunners whose success on the continent doesn’t stack up to Liverpool.

Liverpool dwarf Arsenal and Premier League rivals in Champions League finals

The comparison between English clubs in finals says enough. Liverpool have reached 10 Champions League finals. That puts them well clear of every other English club.

Manchester United are next with five, while Chelsea have reached three. Arsenal, Manchester City and Nottingham Forest are all on two.

This is one of the biggest moments in Arsenal’s European history, but for Liverpool, reaching this kind of stage has been part of the club’s identity for decades. The trophy count makes the gap even clearer.

Liverpool have won the European Cup or Champions League six times. Arsenal are still waiting for their first. That does not take away from what Arteta’s side have done this season. Getting to a Champions League final is a massive achievement for any club.

But it does show why Liverpool fans have that invincible feeling in the competition, especially at Anfield. These nights are woven into the fabric of the club.

The frustration, of course, is that the Reds have not been close enough recently. Across Arne Slot’s first two seasons, Liverpool have met PSG in the knockouts and fallen short twice.

Liverpool belong deep in this competition. Next season, the target has to be playing in May. They need to be better, stronger and ready to compete again for club football’s most coveted prize. That starts with getting the window right.
