Liverpool’s latest defeat has once again placed Arne Slot firmly back in the hotseat.

The Reds were beaten 3-2 by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, a result which completed a Premier League double for United over Liverpool for the first time in a decade. The performance only added to the concerns.

There had been signs of improvement from Liverpool in recent weeks, but this was another damaging afternoon in a season that has rarely felt convincing. Fans are understandably unhappy. However, former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann has now moved to temper expectations of a managerial change.

Did anyone else deserve a 3/10 alongside Mac Allister?

Didi Hamann shares what he has heard about Arne Slot at Liverpool

Slot’s position has come under renewed scrutiny after Liverpool’s defeat to United.

Liverpool were too easy to play through at times, and the latest poor performance has only increased questions about whether the manager’s message is still landing with the squad.

That has been one of the biggest concerns this season. Results have been poor enough, but the manner of some defeats has been just as worrying.

Still, Hamann does not expect Slot to leave Liverpool at the end of the campaign.

He said at the weekend (via GOAL): “I’ve heard that Arne Slot will be there next season. I think there’s a case to be made that maybe a change of manager should happen or should have happened.

“But Liverpool have always been very loyal to their managers. He won the league last season of course so I think it’s a decision I can live with, and I think most fans can live with, if they have a decent finish to the season.”

Hamann also suggested the fanbase is no longer completely united behind Slot.

“For probably the first time in a long time Liverpool fans are split, it’s a very knowledgeable fan base and Liverpool doesn’t usually sack managers,” he added.

“That’s obviously changed in the last 10 or 12 years because the game has changed and managers have to leave quicker than they did 20 or 25 years ago. But usually when the fan base turns, it’s a matter of time before the manager has to go.”

FSG appear to be sticking with Slot for now, and there is logic in that after last season’s title win. Liverpool are a club who should be competing at the very top, though, and this season has fallen well short of that standard.

There are still three games left, and a lot could yet depend on how Slot ends the campaign.
