How FSG’s stance on sacking Arne Slot could be severely tested this season

Liverpool fans should be well aware of how those in a position of power at Anfield currently view Arne Slot.

Despite dropping out of the top four and suffering the joint-most Premier League defeats since 2015/16 (10), the Reds are still backing Slot for the time being.

However, a new report has suggested that this could change in the coming months, with swift exits in the FA Cup and Europe, as well as no Champions League football being secured for next season.

Bad results and no Champions League could see stance on Arne Slot changed

The Guardian have reaffirmed this weekend that despite the issues throughout the campaign to date, there are no immediate plans to change managers on Merseyside.

It is said that Fenway Sports Group, Richard Hughes and more accept that this season has thrown up ‘unprecedented challenges’ for Slot.

However, while FSG are willing to back the Dutchman for now, the three aforementioned factors could change that.

As the report explains: ‘Their resolve, however, will be severely tested should Liverpool’s decline be exposed by City and PSG and the team fail to secure Champions League qualification.’

It does appear as though a top-five finish is going to be the main sticking point, with it added how ‘vital’ a place in Europe’s premier competition is because of the extra revenue it brings to the club.

Liverpool are already worried about the summer transfer window, and not having as big a budget would surely only exacerbate those fears.

Liverpool’s predicted Premier League finish

With FA Cup action taking place this weekend, Liverpool don’t play another league game until April 11 versus Fulham.

Lose that fixture and all of Chelsea, Brentford and Everton could technically overtake the Reds, depending on how many goals are scored in their respective ties next week.

For the time being at least, however, Liverpool are favourites to secure that fifth and final Champions League position.

Opta put them fifth in their predicted table and give them a 23.37% chance of making it into a top-tier European place, while sixth-place Chelsea are given just a 9.51% chance of doing so.
