Trent Alexander-Arnold hails Mohamed Salah and explains why he’s better than Neymar

Trent Alexander-Arnold has claimed that he’d always pick former Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah over Brazilian legend Neymar.

Given their status as two of the best wingers of the 21st century, Salah and Neymar have often been compared throughout recent years.

And although the former Barcelona man’s sheer wizardry often sees him come out on top, Alexander-Arnold says Salah’s dedication to his craft – and his unbelievable output – make him the best in his eyes.

Salah’s record-breaking gives him the edge over Neymar

Since it became clear that Alexander-Arnold was leaving Liverpool last year, his stock has fallen immeasurably in the eyes of his former fans.

Nevertheless, the 27-year-old will always be associated with the Reds, and when asked to pick between Salah and Neymar while appearing on his brother’s TikTok channel this week, his Liverpool affiliation shone through once again.

“I think Neymar has been incredible, like his career was incredible, the things he achieved,” Alexander-Arnold said.

“Also playing against him, tricky, tricky, tricky player to play against. I think he’s incredible and he will go down as a football legend that everybody will remember.

“But, for me, playing with Mo, training with him every day and seeing the sacrifices that he’s made, the numbers, the output, the records smashed. For me, Mo Salah, simple as that.”

Analysis: Is Salah really better than Neymar?

Given they were born only four months apart and play in similar positions, there is a comparison to be made between Salah and Neymar.

The Brazilian was already a household name long before his Egyptian counterpart, but there is a strong argument that his career in Europe did not hit the heights it should have.

He scored 223 goals across 359 appearances for Barcelona and PSG, winning six league titles, seven cups and a Champions League along the way. However, injuries limited his impact at PSG especially, and he was finished at the top level by the age of 31.

Salah has lasted longer, and also beat Neymar’s joint goals tally with Barca and PSG at Liverpool alone, but his 255 goals in 435 games so far makes him less deadly than the Santos man when judging by goals per game.

There is an argument here for both, but given Neymar’s high profile, his brilliant numbers with Barcelona, PSG and Brazil, and his trophies won, we’re not sure Alexander-Arnold is making the correct choice.
