Ryan Gravenberch looks likely to be a Liverpool player for years to come after penning a long-term deal last week.
The Dutchman has evolved into one of Europe’s best midfielders since arriving at Anfield in 2023, and despite a slight dip in form this season, is likely to get even better.
Nevertheless, while Liverpool supporters were undoubtedly pleased to see Gravenberch sign up for six more years with the Reds, many will agree with Jermaine Pennant‘s demand to see him replaced with a natural defensive midfielder next season.

Pennant wants a natural No. 6 at Liverpool
Gravenberch is likely to be part of Liverpool’s starting midfield unit for as long as he stays with the club. His performances last season should have made sure of that.
Despite that, as well as he has done in a deeper role, there is a nagging feeling that Liverpool would be better with a more orthodox No. 6 starting in his place.
Pennant certainly thinks so, and when asked for his reaction to Gravenberch’s new contract while speaking to TalkSPORT, the former Reds winger said he wants to see the 23-year-old released into a more attacking position next term.

“Obviously great news, it’s not letting our players run contracts down leaving us in a bit of a pickle,” the pundit said.
“He’s a great asset to the team but I think next season we’ll have to look for a solid, out and out number six, defensive midfielder, just to reassure that midfield and have one there helping out the defence.
“Because at times we do look vulnerable when he goes on a little wander, because that’s not his natural position.”

Given Arne Slot attempted to sign Martin Zubimendi as his first addition when he took over in 2024, it seems fairly likely that the Dutchman would tend to agree with Pennant here.
Clearly, after Gravenberch did such a job on the way to Liverpool winning the Premier League title last season, he was never going to be replaced in the line up this term.
But the former Ajax man’s deficiencies have been exposed more and more this season, and Slot will not be blind to that. With Curtis Jones looking likely to depart, there should be space for another midfielder to arrive this summer.
For Gravenberch, that should be good news. He is sure to retain his usual place in the starting XI, but could be given less defensive responsibilities. It will not be easy, nor cheap, for Liverpool to find the right player, but having been without a true, top class No. 6 since Fabinho’s exit in 2023, they’ve had enough time to find the answer. It’s time to make it happen.
