Fabrizio Romano explains Serie A interest and Alisson’s Liverpool desire

Alisson is 33, and not over the hill by any means.

He still thinks he has a part to play at Liverpool beyond the end of the season despite intensifying links to Italy.

Romano shared what he knows on his Italian language YouTube channel, saying: “There’s a lot of talk about both Juventus and Inter, so in recent hours the name [Alisson] has been circulating with both clubs, who are evidently looking for a goalkeeper for next summer.

“So, I can tell you that at the moment, what we know about Alisson is that he intends to stay at Liverpool for another year. He still has one year left on his contract and Alisson would like to complete it there, so Alisson doesn’t want to leave at the moment.

“Should Liverpool decide to put him on the market, well we’ll see about that.”

The transfer specialist paints a clear picture — the ball is well and truly in Liverpool’s court. Offers will start flying in, and they must decide if they are ready to let the legendary shot-stopper go.

If the Brazilian is to leave in the summer, his replacement is already waiting in the wings.

Giorgi Mamardashvili joined Liverpool last summer, one year after agreeing to the move. He has barely been involved this season with Arne Slot showing a clear preference for Alisson.

But the change in guard will have to happen at some point. When it does, just how much of a loss will it be?

To compare, we will use Alisson’s performances from this season and the Georgian’s final season at Valencia, using stats per 90 minutes for fair comparison.

As a pure shot-stopper, Mamardashvili can talk to the current Liverpool number one. Admittedly, Valencia were a worse defensive side, but not by much, and his save numbers look really strong.

We’ll just have to see if he can develop on the ball, though Alisson’s distribution has been poor since the turn of the year.

The only way to know if he’s ready will be to throw him into the deep end, which might happen sooner than expected if Liverpool make the decision to sell Alisson in the summer.
