Liverpool’s struggles this season have in part been put down to the amount of churn within the squad from one year to the next.
The Reds shipped out a number of key players during the summer of 2025, with Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold two of the headline names to leave.
Diaz has been having a terrific season with Bayern Munich, while Liverpool‘s Alexander-Arnold succession plan at right-back has so far failed.
Got a horrible feeling Slot is going to keep Gakpo in the XI and drop Salah 😬 Who should be the front four vs Forest?
As a result, supporters have been seriously questioning whether Liverpool made a mistake in selling the two Premier League title winners.
With that in mind, Rousing The Kop asked fans on TalkingPoints to vote for which player they would re-sign for the Reds if they had the chance, with Diaz emerging as the overwhelmingly clear winner.
74% of fans want to re-sign Luis Diaz
Diaz has already registered his best ever season in terms of goals, scoring 19 times for Bayern. Amazingly, he also has 12 assists on the board as well.
With Alexander-Arnold struggling to even get on the pitch at Real Madrid, it should perhaps not have been a surprise to see Liverpool fans vote in their droves to re-sign Diaz over the Scouser.

A whopping 74% voted that they would buy the Colombian back instead of Alexander-Arnold, with the comments giving a window into the reasons why.
“Diaz’s pace is so badly missed on the left,” said one supporter. “Never Trent again!!!,” raged another. “Diaz was never a traitor, as Trent show himself to be!! That’s not the Scouse way! Very disappointed with him.”
“It’s funny because last season you probably would have said Trent’s more important to Liverpool,” someone else weighed in. “We didn’t know what we had with Diaz until he left.”
Pick one player you’d re-sign – Luis Diaz or Trent Alexander-Arnold?
Although the former No. 7 was the clear winner here, there was some support for Alexander-Arnold, with some able to put personal differences aside to see just how much his creativity is currently missed.
“Tough one but Trent for me, we’re missing him going forward as well as at the back,” one fan said.
“Trent all the way. Some may not want to admit it but he has been such a huge miss,” another argued. “Diaz was great, but Trent can give you that moment of magic to win any game.”
Will Liverpool replace Diaz in 2026?
Had Liverpool effectively replaced Diaz after selling him last year, it’s arguable whether these poll results would be the same.
The biggest problem with letting the 29-year-old leave was that the Reds did not bring anyone in to play on the left wing. Cody Gakpo has had no direct competition this season and has badly struggled as a result.
A mixture of fan frustration at Gakpo and not having another option to do what Diaz had done so well is probably the cause of these results.
Supporters are desperate for Liverpool to enter the market for a Diaz replacement this summer, and all the signs are that the Reds will finally bring in a pacy, direct left winger to plug what has become a gaping hole in the squad.
