Arne Slot has been asking for pace in his Liverpool frontline for a while, and Anthony Gordon would provide that.
The Reds sold Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich in the summer, while Darwin Nunez has also departed the club.
It has left Liverpool with limited and pretty slow options on the left-hand side, something Slot is not a fan of.
If you were forced to sell one Liverpool player to Manchester United, who goes?
The manager has already spoken about signing pacey forwards, obviously making a comparison to PSG when doing so.
After signing Hugo Ekitike, the 47-year-old spoke about his desire to add ‘incredible pace’ to his team.
He said: “As we can all see, he’s [Ekitike] a good finisher, he’s very comfortable on the ball. But what stands out for me is he belongs to the fastest players we have.
“That was one of the things I wanted to add to this team – incredible pace. Because I see many of the top teams have one, two, three individuals that have pace that is exceptional.
“We faced Paris Saint-Germain last season, where we had to face [Ousmane] Dembele, [Bradley] Barcola, [Desire] Doue – all these incredibly fast players. So that is what we’ve tried to add with him.”
Anthony Gordon is the fastest player in the Champions League
Well, when it comes to incredible pace, there are few better options out there than Anthony Gordon.
Data revealed this week showed that Hugo Ekitike is Liverpool’s fastest player in the Champions League this term.
However, even the Frenchman’s 34.91km/h total pales in comparison to Gordon’s this term.
The Newcastle winger has recorded a top speed of 37.92km/h, which is the most of any player still left in the competition, as per CIES.
Cody Gakpo and Florian Wirtz, meanwhile, did not even make the list for their speeds in the Champions League.
The latter is not a natural left-winger anyway and will likely be primarily used as a 10 moving forward.
However, Gakpo continues to frustrate Liverpool fans, and given that he’s not even the type of player Slot wants in his team, the Dutchman should be replaced by Gordon.
Prove me wrong: Anthony Gordon is still the PERFECT attacking signing for Liverpool…
Anthony Gordon missed out on Liverpool transfer
There has been some talk on social media about Gordon joining Liverpool in the last week, though there have been no confirmed reports of interest.
However, the Newcastle winger did miss out on a move to Anfield back in 2024.
Gordon commented on not signing for Liverpool in an interview last year. He said: “It’s true, that was the case,” he said on almost joining Liverpool. “I would never lie.”
“It was difficult for me because one, I had the Euros, which was horrendous for me mentally. I was there, I wasn’t playing. Then I had the transfer stuff.
“With PSR, I thought I was going to leave at some point in the window. It didn’t happen.
“I had to get my head around that to begin with. And then to get my head around it again (when it didn’t happen) was hard.”
