Why Arne Slot might not be sacked even if Liverpool don’t qualify for Champions League

There has been much talk around Arne Slot losing his job if Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.

It is an easy leap to make, given the Reds were crowned Premier League champions under a year ago and are now down in sixth place.

There remains a small chance Everton could even finish above Liverpool this season, and pundits have begun to question the manager.

Jamie Carragher thinks that Slot won’t have ‘a leg to stand on’ if the Merseysiders fail to qualify for the Champions League.

Elsewhere, Jamie O’Hara suggested ‘Arne Slot has to go‘ if the Reds don’t end 2025/26 in Europe’s premier competition.

If no, where will he be instead?

Richard Hughes looking at more than Champions League place

Talk about Liverpool failing to qualify for the Champions League has once again emerged on the back of the pre-Sunderland press conference.

Slot has suggested that Liverpool could struggle to make signings this summer if they don’t finish in the top-four/five.

FSG will be fine financially without a place in the competition, though, while a new report suggests Slot’s job isn’t dependent on achieving Champions League football.

A piece in The Times on the back of the 47-year-old’s recent comments said: “Sporting director, Richard Hughes, will scrutinise more than simply results. The process is more holistic than Champions League or else.”

Arne Slot may still be in danger

If Liverpool are indeed not just basing Slot’s future on Champions League football/results, then surely it must be performances?

On that front, we have seen a slight improvement over the last couple of weeks, but things are still not ideal.

Liverpool have lost their edge, and it feels like teams are, certainly at Anfield, no longer afraid of the Reds and are more than happy to come and have a go.

The performances of certain players remain concerning as well, and Slot’s Liverpool have been called boring.

We won’t get Jurgen Klopp’s heavy metal football back anytime soon, but if Slot needs his team to play well to keep his job, there still needs to be major improvements before the end of the season.
