Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz have been two of the few bright sparks for Liverpool during a difficult campaign.

Arne Slot’s future continues to be questioned, but fans are surely hoping the Reds have now turned a corner.

After a dominant 6-0 win over Qarabag in the Champions League, Liverpool finally won a Premier League match this past Saturday, beating Newcastle United 4-1.

As expected, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz were among the top performers in that fixture.

Ekitike scored a brace to take his tally for the season to 15, while Wirtz’s impressive Anfield record continued.

Milos Kerkez’s praise for ‘brilliant’ Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz

Wirtz and Ekitike’s partnership at Liverpool has been blossoming for a while now, and Milos Kerkez has now shared his thoughts on the duo.

When speaking to LFC, the Hungarian left-back suggested the duo are just as impressive in training as they are in a game when fans are watching.

He said: “Yeah, brilliant players [Ekitike and Wirtz]. I watch them every day in training, it’s nothing new for me but it’s enjoyable when people come to the stadium and see these two ballers playing like that!

“They’re really helping us a lot. They improved a lot and they’re going to continue to do that for the rest of the season.”

How many goal contributions will Florian Wirtz end 25/26 with? He’s predicting some ‘crazy’ numbers!

When Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz can set Liverpool record

After Wirtz assisted Ektike against Newcastle last week, the duo have now linked up for six goals across all competitions this season.

It means they have matched Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen for most goal contributions in a single season (2002/03) by two Liverpool players aged 23 or under.

As a result, as long as Ekitike and Wirtz combine on one more occasion this season, they will surpass Gerrard and Owen.

Liverpool are next in action on Sunday afternoon against Manchester City, and a big performance will be needed from the Reds’ in-form duo if they are to emerge with a positive result.
