Liverpool have a grand total of zero fit senior right-backs as the January window edges towards its closure.

The Reds were already looking short in the position after seeing Conor Bradley ruled out for the rest of the season earlier this month.

With Joe Gomez also currently sidelined, the last thing Liverpool needed was another problem at full-back.

Unfortunately, that’s exactly what they got on Wednesday as Jeremie Frimpong was forced off after only four minutes of the Champions League clash with Qarabag.

Arne Slot gave an answer on potential transfer business on the back of Frimpong’s latest setback straight after the match, and speaking several hours later, journalist Fabrizio Romano has now suggested that the Reds could look to make a signing.

Liverpool could sign a right-back this January

It is not only Liverpool’s right-back situation which is causing them trouble this January. As Wednesday’s game showed, they currently have only one available centre-back in Virgil van Dijk.

As a result, the back line is badly stretched, making a new arrival feel like a necessity.

But according to Romano, Liverpool will not be forced into making a new addition. Speaking on his YouTube channel early on Thursday morning, the transfer expert did however claim that the Reds may make a new signing if they feel they can buy a ‘Liverpool level’ player.

“At the moment what I can tell you is that Liverpool already assessed potential options at right-back when Conor Bradley suffered his injury against Arsenal, and at that time Liverpool felt in the market there were no good right-backs to sign in this January transfer window,” he said.

“This is why they decided not to proceed with any of these players and open concrete negotiations for a right-back in January. Now, after Jeremie Frimpong’s injury lets see. If Liverpool find a solution they could enter the market.”

Is there anyone out there for Liverpool?

Clearly, Liverpool are desperate to avoid a situation where they bring in a player who is only needed for a few short months towards the end of this season.

However, the need for a centre-back is certainly a long-term one and there is arguably a similar situation at right-back, where Bradley’s injuries are problematic and Frimpong looks better in attack.

A long-term challenger for Bradley would feel appropriate, so if Liverpool can identify and bring him in over the next few days then that would be ideal.

In the opinion of Rousing The Kop, Feyenoord’s Givairo Read would be an excellent solution and one which could potentially be available in the last days of the window.

Failing that, Liverpool surely have to pull the trigger on one of the centre-backs they’ve been tracking, ideally someone who can also play at right-back. Ultimately, the most likely scenario still seems to be that the Reds will do nothing, but they are at least looking. Let’s see if anything gives.
