Liverpool fans adamant one player can’t start vs Qarabag as ‘incompetent’ Arne Slot claim made

Liverpool will be looking to book their place in the last-16 of the Champions League when they play Qarabag on Wednesday.

Arne Slot’s side beat Marseille 3-0 in their last European outing, which was a much-improved showing from the Reds.

However, Liverpool reverted to type at the weekend, dropping three points to an incredibly out-of-form Bournemouth team.

The weekend’s result has seen questions asked of Arne Slot once more, with supporters’ faith in the Dutchman’s ability to turn things around seemingly dwindling.

A positive display and result against Qarabag, who have never beaten an English opponent, should be on the cards on January 28, but given how Liverpool have played in recent months, nothing is guaranteed.

Will Liverpool beat Qarabag and qualify for the last-16?

Liverpool fans want Cody Gakpo dropped vs Qarabag

Ahead of the game, we asked Liverpool fans who they want to see feature in the upcoming Champions League tie.

Using Rousing The Kop’s TalkingPoints platform, it was made clear that Cody Gakpo is not wanted in the XI.

One fan rather passionately wrote: “Jones and Gakpo out. Slot, out yesterday, he’s totally incompetent to handle this team. LFC is a race car, that has an 80-year-old old man on the wheel… He just can’t… Last year was just a fluke. End this ordeal and bring in Xabi.”

A second echoed: “Not going to happen, but Gakpo should be dropped…”

“Gakpo out, maybe Wirtz in the middle and Rio on the left,” suggested a third Liverpool fan.

Another suggested that there could be changes in midfield: “Can see Wirtz being given a rest, looks like he needs one – Mac Allister too.”

While a fifth Reds supporter also called for Rio Ngumoha to start ahead of Gakpo: “Rio for Gakpo.”

Gakpo started ahead of Hugo Ekitike in the striker role against Bournemouth, though the Frenchman is expected to regain his place against Qarabag.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Gakpo feature on the left on Wednesday, but that may then mean Wirtz or Dominik Szoboszlai are dropped or moved into a different position.

The Hungarian can play at right-back, which would allow the German to act as a 10, but Szoboszlai has been Liverpool’s best player this season and starting him in defence wouldn’t help anyone.
