Liverpool and Bournemouth were once two football clubs at opposite ends of the English footballing spectrum, but recent years have brought them together.

A minnow of the third and even fourth division for so long, the Cherries are now an established Premier League side who regularly mix it with the big boys.

Furthermore, they have become highly regarded for their excellent recruitment model and attractive style of play.

Two big figures in that renaissance have been Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes and current manager Andoni Iraola. Hughes brought Iraola to the Vitality Stadium from Rayo Vallecano, and his ethos of intense, aggressive attacking football has seen some supporters long for his arrival at Anfield.

Certainly, if Arne Slot leaves his job in the near future, you feel Iraola would not be far from the shortlist. One big factor working in the Basque’s favour is his standing relationship with Hughes, and when the sporting director left for Liverpool in 2024, Iraola made his feelings on swapping the South Coast for Merseyside crystal clear.

When Liverpool play Bournemouth on Saturday, it would not be a surprise to see Hughes present at the Vitality.

If and when he meets Iraola behind the scenes, it would be fascinating to be a fly on the wall. They may have plenty to discuss soon enough.

The relationship between the two men is obviously very good, and as Iraola said in March 2024, he was happy to see Hughes given the chance to join Liverpool.

“We knew some weeks ago he was leaving,” the manager told BBC Radio Solent. “He has been very important in establishing me here and I wish him all the best.

“It is a good opportunity for him and I hope he does well.”

Should Hughes come calling for the hot seat at Liverpool in 2026, it is fairly obvious what Iraola’s answer would be.

Could Iraola be Liverpool’s next manager?

On the face of it, some would suggest any Liverpool supporter advocating that Hughes and Iraola should reunite at Anfield is crazy.

Bournemouth have had a difficult season and currently find themselves in 15th position in the Premier League table.

Nevertheless, Iraola’s stock has barely been affected, with the Cherries continuing to play some attractive and full-throttle football.

Given better players and better conditions at Liverpool, you could easily see how he could get the Anfield crowd onside with his team’s style of play.

Iraola’s contract is expiring this summer, meaning Hughes would not have to haggle with his former club over their terms to let him leave. If Slot does end up leaving, the former Athletic Bilbao midfielder would surely be in the frame. Liverpool fans may get another idea as to why this Saturday.
