Liverpool supporters’ relationship with Arne Slot has become mixed to say the least over the course of a disappointing season.
Rewind back to May, and the Dutchman’s stock could not be higher with Reds fans, having just delivered an unexpected Premier League title win.
However, things have unravelled for Slot and Liverpool in 2025/26, and although results have improved recently, poor performances and a turgid style of football have left supporters disillusioned with the head coach.

Is there enough quality here to avoid a repeat of last season?
Liverpool will not win the Premier League, that is clear by now. They may feel they have an outside chance in the Champions League, but if they do not improve quickly, that will not happen either.
As a result, the FA Cup is comfortably the best chance Slot and Liverpool have of winning a trophy this season. As they prepare to face Barnsley in third round at Anfield on Monday, supporters have had their say on Rousing The Kop‘s new TalkingPoints platform about whether a cup win would be enough to keep Slot in the job.
Liverpool fans want more than just the FA Cup
Liverpool have only won the FA Cup once in the past 20 years. It is not something they have been doing enough of in recent history.
Consequently, Slot delivering more major silverware in 2026 is not to be sniffed at, and around 25% of the 400 or so fans responding felt a cup win should keep him in at Liverpool regardless of league position.

However, the vast majority of Liverpool fans clearly want more from this season. 32% gave an outright ‘no’, suggesting Slot should be sacked if the FA Cup is all he has to show for his second campaign, while the most popular vote – 43% – was that the Dutchman should stay if he wins the cup and also secures a top-four finish.
“The cup win is status but Champions League is where the money is,” said one supporter.
“No definitely not. We have lost our identity this season and look a shadow of the team we were the first half of last season and the 8 years previous,” added another. “We have been pretty poor since after the PSG game last season. We thought the lads had checked out because they won the league.”
Is winning the FA Cup enough to keep Arne Slot in a job beyond 2025/26? If not, why? 🤔

FA Cup win should keep Slot at Liverpool
The FA Cup has certainly lost a lot of its appeal over the past two decades, but it remains an important trophy which Liverpool should always be in the mix to win.
Too many times that has not been the case over recent years, with last season’s humiliating third-round exit against Plymouth Argyle a good example of how the Reds have failed in this competition.
Although bigger targets always come first, the reality of Liverpool’s season is that they are unlikely to be anywhere near either the Premier League or Champions League.
While a lot of the blame for that does lie with Slot, delivering a cup to add to his Premier League trophy should be enough to keep him at Anfield for a third term.
A top four finish would guarantee that, and Liverpool would be crazy to change him unless a Luis Enrique or Xabi Alonso became available over the summer. But even if Slot wins the cup but falls short in fifth, sixth or seventh, he should still be given time to bring Liverpool back next season. He would be on borrowed time, but would deserve that chance.
