Liverpool sources said something about Mo Salah last season that is now very important

Mohamed Salah was Liverpool’s star man again last season, but his situation now shows how quickly things can change.

The Reds could never have imagined the scenario they would be in now, so soon after winning the Premier League, but they really are in a crisis.

Things have only been made worse by Salah’s controversial interview, with many at the club ‘baffled’ by the fact that he believes they want him out of the club.

The staggering sum Liverpool would save on wages if Mohamed Salah leaves. How would you reinvest it?💰

“As well as Salah’s wages, which reportedly are around £400,000 per week, you’re also looking at a saving in National Insurance contributions. That’s not a trivial sum. National Insurance is set at 15 per cent as of April 2025, so if £400,000 is Salah’s basic weekly wage, Liverpool are also paying another £60,000 on top of that.

“Over the course of 18 months, that’s another £4.7m. The numbers aren’t an exact science, because some of Salah’s wages will be paid as image rights, which are taxed recently.”

As surprising as his comments are, though, Liverpool sources have claimed that there is one thing that has not entirely shocked them, especially as they have seen it all before.

Liverpool already knew Mohamed Salah likes to tease the media

It was only last season that fans were begging Salah to sign a new contract as it looked like he was going to go, with the Egyptian teasing the media each week.

He did not often speak to them before this, but while his contract talks were ongoing, he would drop nuggets of information after games to keep everyone guessing.

He has done similar now too, of course on a more serious level, but journalist Adam Crafton has revealed that inside sources at Liverpool were not worried back then as it is ‘who he is’.

“But I do find it very, you know, kind of like transactional, the way he uses the media,” he told The Athletic FC Podcast.

“I find it quite charmless. You know, last season when he comes out and all of a sudden these post-match television interviews when the contract negotiations are going on.

“And I remember speaking to someone at Liverpool at the time and I was saying to them, are you worried, you know, that Salah is going go? And they said, ‘no, we just know he’s dancing the public dance. This is what Salah does. This is kind of who he is.’

“And I think that’s what we’re seeing again now. He’s not getting his own way. So he’s stomping his feet.”

Alisson sets the record straight on Slot, but how long will the believe last?

“We believe in his knowledge, we believe in his style of play and that he is capable of helping us turning around this situation.”

Liverpool must stick to their principles

Liverpool have always had the motto of ‘nobody is bigger than the club,’ and they simply do not allow big egos to dictate what goes on.

It looks like they are applying the same logic now as well which is good, as the board are clearly backing Slot and allowing him to lay down the law.

Leaving him out of the squad is certainly a bold, but necessary, move and it will hopefully teach him a lesson, although it is hard to see his opinion changing.

It certainly looks like it could be a sad ending for the Egyptian King, so it might be best if he moves on without saying anything more.
