Liverpool insiders are ‘baffled’ by one point Mohamed Salah made in post-Leeds United interview

Mohamed Salah appears to have gone into business for himself with his comments after Liverpool drew 3-3 with Leeds United.

Salah slammed Liverpool and Arne Slot on the back of Saturday’s game, casting his future at Anfield into doubt.

Fabrizio Romano has given a transfer update on the winger, and it appears as though a January move is now possible.

The staggering sum Liverpool would save on wages if Mohamed Salah leaves. How would you reinvest it?💰

“As well as Salah’s wages, which reportedly are around £400,000 per week, you’re also looking at a saving in National Insurance contributions. That’s not a trivial sum. National Insurance is set at 15 per cent as of April 2025, so if £400,000 is Salah’s basic weekly wage, Liverpool are also paying another £60,000 on top of that.

“Over the course of 18 months, that’s another £4.7m. The numbers aren’t an exact science, because some of Salah’s wages will be paid as image rights, which are taxed recently.”

His comments came on the back of Liverpool dropping Salah for three league games in a row, something that we have not seen happen to the Egyptian previously.

But was his recent snub a calculated plan to ensure he is blamed for Liverpool’s form? It doesn’t appear so.

Liverpool confused by Mohamed Salah’s transfer claim

Salah has been criticised by the likes of Wayne Rooney this season for his form on the field, with Jamie Carragher wanting the Liverpool winger to show more leadership off the pitch.

But we haven’t really seen anyone come out and say that the 33-year-old is to blame for the Reds’ massive decline this term.

Now, journalist James Pearce has commented on the interview and revealed what people inside Liverpool were left baffled by.

He said: “Well, what I will say is from the conversations I’ve had today, people at the club are pretty baffled by the suggestion that what he means by someone wants him out.

“You know, a couple of people have said to me that this was very much viewed as a short-term thing with him being out the team to try and get some stability back rather than it wasn’t ‘right We’re casting him aside with a view to offloading him in January’.”

Who could sign Mohamed Salah in January

Whether or not someone at Liverpool actually wants Salah out remains to be seen, though the noise coming out of the club suggests that is not the case.

But with Slot still supported by FSG, the veteran forward’s comments have put the club in a tricky position where it looks as though they will have to pick between their manager and one of their all-time top goalscorers.

Unless something changes with the Dutchman before January, a Salah exit now seems the most likely scenario this winter.

Recent reports claim that Saudi clubs still want Salah on the back of interest earlier this year, with Al Hilal and Al-Qadsiah named as interested parties.
