Slot commented on his future briefly, shortly after the harrowing PSV defeat.

The Dutchman was also asked whether he had spoken to the Liverpool hierarchy amid what has been a very difficult campaign.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday evening, he said: “Yeah, but not in the sense that they tell me every single minute ‘we support you’, ‘we support you’, ‘we support you’.

“We talk a lot. If we are winning, last season, and if we are losing. And then they are helpful to me, to the team. So yeah, we do have those conversations, but they don’t call me in every single minute of the day to tell me that they still trust me.

“We do have the normal conversations and in those conversations, I feel the trust. But I haven’t spoken to them after this game yet, so let’s see!”

How Arne Slot can realistically keep his job

Liverpool have now lost nine of their last 12 matches under their current manager in all competitions, their joint-worst run of form since the 1953/54 season when they were relegated from Division 1.

Previous reports after the weekend said that Slot was still backed by those in a position of power at Anfield.

But such a dire run of form does appear to be untenable, and something will need to change if he is to keep his job in the coming weeks.

The meeting with West Ham United is now simply a must-win tie, while wins over Sunderland and Leeds early next month are sorely needed.

Liverpool’s board are not known for making rash decisions, but even they must be questioning the state of the team right now.
