Liverpool are expected to make a couple of additions to their squad in the 2026 winter transfer window.
Amid Ibrahima Konate’s struggles for form, the Reds could pay up to land Marc Guehi early next year despite the centre-back being on course to become a free agent in June.
Further forward, Liverpool have a firm interest in Antoine Semenyo, whose release clause will become active in January (£60m plus £5m in add-ons).
Who is your dream Liverpool January signing?
Meanwhile, some Liverpool fans want a defensive midfielder signed over more attacking reinforcements.
However, a new update this week has suggested that another position is being looked at by those in a position of power at Anfield.
Liverpool could sign another striker
Taking to X/Twitter, journalist Florian Plettenberg wrote: “Liverpool are definitely planning additions in January. They are looking for a winger who can make an immediate impact, with Antoine Semenyo among the candidates. They are also monitoring strikers with favourable market conditions, and they have an eye on centre-backs as well, including Marc Guehi.”
The Guehi and Semenyo links are nothing new. But fans have been left pretty baffled by claims their club are potentially looking to land another striker in the upcoming winter window, taking to social media to share their bemusement.
One fan exclaimed: “Strikers?! What are Ekitike and Isak then?!”
“Strikers? What happens to Isak and Ekitike?” echoed another supporter.
A third asked: “Strikers???” followed by a laughing emoji.
“Striker, you must be joking. What is Ekitike and Isak? Are they goalkeepers?” joked another.
A fifth Liverpool fan wrote: “Strikers??? But no mention of midfielders??? Are you ——- joking.”
Another supporter stated: “Strikers again? What’s the use when we have these old players who don’t want to play with new signings?”
Should Liverpool sign Antoine Semenyo or Bradley Barcola?
Hugo Ekitike position change
It remains to be seen if Liverpool will actually push ahead with a striker signing in just over a month.
But if they do, it would likely require a change of system from Arne Slot.
Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike cost over £200m combined with potential add-ons, and the Reds’ manager is already struggling to fit the duo into the same eleven.
If another number nine arrived at Anfield, we could see Slot switch up his front-line and potentially play Ekitike in a slightly deeper role.
A narrow 4-2-3-1 formation with Florian Wirtz and Mohamed Salah out wide and the Frenchman playing just behind Isak would make the most sense, allowing a potential new striker to act as a rotation option.
