Jamie Carragher says he’s now worried about Florian Wirtz for a completely different reason

Florian Wirtz has been under the spotlight ever since he arrived in the summer.

Despite having an impressive transfer window on paper, the Reds’ new signings have not really been benefiting the team just yet.

Many have found it hard to fit in, with one of these being Wirtz who has been tried out in multiple positions already.

The German has certainly not lived up to expectations and has just two assists since arriving, with many fans left worried about whether he will be good enough.

Jamie Carragher, though, has another worry that could become a big problem for the Reds, with the early signs suggesting it might just cost him his Liverpool career.

Jamie Carragher worries that Florian Wirtz just does not suit the Premier League

Everyone knows just how much quality Wirtz possesses as he is raved about in his home country, but he has not been able to show it at Liverpool.

That is partly true at least, as in the Champions League the German has impressed, with this being when he has performed the best.

In the Premier League, though, he is yet to have a standout performance, and Carragher believes that his style of play may just never suit domestic football in England.

“Now, I was worried about Wirtz early on,” he said on The Overlap.

“Not because he wasn’t amazing, but I also think when you pay that much money for someone, I just want to see a few glimpses of something that I think, oh, okay, I know he’s not the Bayer Leverkusen version yet.

“That will come in a few months when he gets up to speed. But, I can see little things.

“I’ve seen, that was early on, I’ve seen a few little things, you know, the backheel of Chelsea. He played well against Real Madrid. But, my worry about Wirtz is that, when people are saying, ‘oh, he’s got to get used to his teammates’ and stuff like that, but he’s actually played well in Europe.

“But, it’s a different game to the Premier League. So, he’s played really well, I think away from home, was it Frankfurt, and played really well against Real Madrid at home.

“But, he’s found it really tough in the Premier League. And, I worry about him sort of going forward. I get it’s early days, but I need to see something.”

Florian Wirtz cannot deal with the physicality

Of course, strength is not the only factor that can make someone an efficient footballer in the Premier League, but it will certainly help a lot.

It is not that Wirtz needs to bulk up, as a player like Santi Cazorla can be used as a role model, but he needs to learn when to be more physical or how to use it to his advantage.

As someone incredibly skilful, Wirtz should be able to win free-kicks with ease, with the use of his body so important in achieving this.

Eden Hazard and Bukayo Saka are two more examples of players who are not the strongest but made it work for them in England, with this the route Wirtz needs to go down.

At just 22, he has plenty of time to learn, develop and grow, suggesting that once he understands the Premier League fully, he might just go on to set the league alight.
