Jamie Carragher makes bold Ibrahima Konate claim amid uncertain future

Ibrahima Konate has still shown no indication of signing a new contract.

The Reds, on paper, have one of the strongest teams in the division, with the number of options Arne Slot has being impressive to say the least.

The defence is a little different, though, as Liverpool have just three first-team centre-backs available, one of these being Konate who may not be around for much longer.

The Frenchman’s contract runs out in the summer and talks have not progressed, with a number of big teams keeping an eye on the situation.

Bayern Munich are the latest to show an interest, which may worry some Liverpool fans, but Jamie Carragher has made a bold claim that says otherwise.

Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool will be fine even if Ibrahima Konate leaves

Konate has been a revelation ever since he arrived, with the 26-year-old forming a great partnership at the back with Virgil van Dijk.

Granted, they have both had questionable moments, especially this season, but those higher up at Liverpool, as well as the fans, will be desperate to see them stay together beyond this season.

If that cannot happen, though, Carragher does not think Liverpool should be worried, with the former defender believing Konate is replaceable.

“I’d like him to stay but if he doesn’t stay, Liverpool will sign someone else. Liverpool won’t fall apart if Konate leaves,’ Carragher told the Daily Mail.

“He’s not Virgil van Dijk. He’s a good centre-back who you hope will sign, but if he doesn’t want to sign, Liverpool will be absolutely fine.

“He’s a very good centre-back, he’s a title winner at Liverpool, he’s played in the Champions League final against Real Madrid. He’s obviously a quality centre-back.

“It’s not poor management [if he goes for free]. You can’t physically make somebody sign a contract. Then it’s your decision, do you keep him to the length of his contract or do you sell him?”

Liverpool should still keep Ibrahima Konate until the end of the season

Although it would mean letting him go for nothing at the end of the season, Liverpool should not cash in on him in January for cheap.

They are already short of options at the back, and although they will likely recruit in January, they need to keep Konate too just in case, as they know he is Premier League-proven.

There is still a chance he could have a late change of heart, should he not agree a pre-contract with another club that is, so leaving it as late as possible might be best.

As Carragher said, Liverpool will, of course, hope he puts pen to paper and commits his long-term future to the club, but if he does not do that, then fans can trust the club to find a replacement that is just as good, if not better.
