Liverpool’s academy has produced some Premier League greats over the years.
Players such as Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, and even Trent Alexander-Arnold are considered among some of the best-ever players in England’s top flight.
Some, such as Curtis Jones and Conor Bradley, are still trying to etch their names into Anfield’s history books and with the way things are going for them so far, they could be well on their way.
There have, however, also been times when Liverpool’s academy players have been hyped up but have then never managed to live up to expectations.

And, even though these were the fortunes of Rhian Brewster, Liverpool still managed to get £23.5 million for him back in 2020.
Rhian Brewster was expected to be Liverpool’s next Ian Rush
There’s no hiding from the fact that Liverpool’s academy is one of the best in the world.
As mentioned, they often produce incredible talents, so it’s not a surprise to see a lot of their youngsters built up to be the next big thing.
Brewster was no exception to this, with some thinking that the youngster could end up becoming Liverpool’s next Ian Rush.
Things obviously didn’t end up working out that way, and even though Liverpool got a decent chunk of money for Brewster, at the time, fans were gutted that he exited Anfield, especially after all the hype that was built up around him.
His big-money move to the Blades was expected to kick-start his career, but it genuinely couldn’t have gone any worse for him.
In the 119 games the striker played for Sheffield United, he only contributed to 13 goals across all competitions, with four of them coming in the 2024-25 season.
The fact that he failed to score or assist once during his first year with the Blades is also staggering.
Why things went so wrong for Brewster, and what is he doing now
Injuries have taken a massive toll on Brewster’s career, that is, even when he was still a Liverpool player.
Throughout the entirety of his career, the Englishman has missed 167 games due to injuries so far.
The vast majority of these came while he was at Bramall Lane, but even since he left the Blades in the summer, they’ve not seemed to slow down.
He’s already missed seven games for Derby County due to a couple of different reasons, and unless he can get a handle on things, it’s hard to see how he’d have any sort of future left in football.

It’s always sad to see a talent as big as Brewster’s go to waste, but because of injuries, that’s unfortunately the way that things have panned out since his Anfield exit.
There’s still time for him to get things back on track, but now that the Englishman is 25 years old, it feels like it’s now or never.
