Jeff Stelling believes Liverpool are missing ‘brilliant’ former star, and he’s partly correct

Liverpool look nowhere near the team they were last season.

The Reds are in a spot of bother right now as teams seem to have identified their weakness, or weaknesses in this case, and exploited them game after game.

This has left them on a run of four losses on the bounce and in seventh place, even below Manchester United.

There are so many problems and missing pieces to the jigsaw, but Jeff Stelling thinks he knows the exact player Liverpool need.

He believes that one of their former players would be the perfect candidate, and he is both right and wrong to some degree.

When facing Brentford on Saturday, it was a bit of a reunion for many of the current and former Liverpool stars, with three former Reds in the Bees’ lineup.

One of these was former captain Jordan Henderson, with the Englishman still going strong at the age of 35.

Since he joined Brentford he has been a breath of fresh air, and against Liverpool, he was dominant in the middle of the park.

He was brilliant defensively, offered an outlet with his passing range and, of course, his leadership, even though he is not their captain, helped get them over the line.

All of this led to Stelling believing that Henderson is the exact player Liverpool need right now, with the presenter a big fan.

“You know what Liverpool are missing? They’re missing Jordan Henderson. There we go. I am now the leader of the Jordan Henderson fan club,” he said on talkSPORT.

“Again, he was brilliant. He just controls everything. Brentford had 11 star players out there.”

Liverpool already have similar to Jordan Henderson

There is no denying that Henderson was great and he probably would have started for Liverpool should he have still been at the club and playing like that, but the Reds also have similar already.

Both Curtis Jones and Dominik Szoboszlai work just as hard and can offer as much on the ball, with the pair also having quietly good leadership skills.

Henderson would add a little more balance to the side but that could also come at the cost of creative threat, suggesting he would not actually be needed.

It would have certainly felt weird for fans seeing him line up against the club he called home for 12 years, and he definitely put in a strong performance, but what the Reds need is a magician and not another workhorse.
