Liverpool are now willing to make an offer worth more than £35 million to bring a new centre-back to Anfield in the January transfer window.

The Reds’ back four has been one of their main problem areas this season, with Ibrahima Konate having one of the worst seasons of his career.

Others, such as Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, are also to blame for Liverpool’s poor results, with none of their first-team squad performing to the best of their ability.

That’s why it doesn’t come as a surprise to see players being linked with a winter switch to Anfield.

Antoine Semenyo has been the main player linked with a Liverpool transfer, but realistically, a new centre-back is what the Anfield outfit need to solve their issues.

And now, it seems like the steps are being put into place to make Arne Slot’s starting XI more solid.

Liverpool are willing to pay over £35 million for Joel Ordonez in the January transfer window

One key area that Liverpool failed to bolster enough in the summer transfer window was their centre-backs.

Although they signed Giovanni Leoni, now that he’s injured for the season, there are only three options available to Slot.

This is why players such as Marc Guehi have been linked with a potential January move to Liverpool, but, as per a new report from Bola VIP, it seems like Club Brugge’s Joel Ordonez is now on top of their wishlist.

The report from the Portuguese outlet starts by saying that the Ecuadorian is ‘part of Liverpool’s plans’ in the upcoming transfer window.

Liverpool have been previously linked with Ordonez, but a move never came to fruition.

Bola VIP add that the Anfield outfit would be willing to offer a fee in excess of €40 million (£35 million) to get a deal over the line.

Slot and Richard Hughes would also offer the 21-year-old around €3 million (£2.6 million) per year to secure his services.

Several other clubs are also interested in signing Ordonez in the future, but since Liverpool would be able to offer the defender more money, they’d likely be the top dog in the race.

Although Virgil van Dijk will be trying his best to get his back four in line, with the way Liverpool are playing at the moment, it doesn’t feel like anything will help them.

The Dutchman hasn’t had the best of seasons himself so far, but the fact that he’s been the Reds’ best defender by some distance this term shows how poor Liverpool have been.

Even at the start of the season, when they won all five of their opening Premier League games, they only came away with all three points from each of those games due to last-minute winners.

A lot of the time when they go down by a goal or two, it’s due to a mistake from one of the back four, and unless that’s ironed out soon, their Premier League title hopes will be gone.

If Liverpool don’t sign a new centre-back in January or at least try and shore up their back four in one way or another, things will go from bad to worse.
