Ryan Gravenberch names the Liverpool player he’d want as his Assistant Manager in the future

Ryan Gravenberch would have Virgil van Dijk as his assistant manager if he became a manager himself in the future.

The Dutch duo were two of Liverpool’s best players last season, with them both managing to keep opposing attackers away from the Reds’ net.

This season, things have been a tad different, with things such as injuries and poor performances getting in the way of Liverpool being on top of the Premier League table.

Gravenberch and Van Dijk have, however, proven their worth at times this term, with the former of the two explaining why he’d have Liverpool’s captain as his assistant.

It’s hard to hide from the fact that Van Dijk has been one of Liverpool’s best players over the last few years.

Before joining Liverpool, he never managed to fully reach his potential, but under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp and now Arne Slot, he’s seen as one of the best centre-backs in the world.

During his time at Anfield, the Dutchman’s knowledge of the game has grown massively, and since he became the captain after Jordan Henderson exited, he’s also managed to develop some solid leadership skills.

And now, while speaking to British GQ, Gravenberch has outlined Van Dijk’s football knowledge as the reason why he’d want him to become his assistant manager in the future.

“Maybe Virgil, because he’s the captain and he knows a lot about football.”

As mentioned, the relationship between Van Dijk and Gravenberch on the pitch is already solid.

They’re seen as two of the Premier League’s best players in their positions and, without them, Liverpool would have had no chance of winning the title last term.

This season, most of their focus will likely be on winning the Champions League, and after Liverpool beat Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 on Wednesday, that feels like it could become a possibility.

Although Gravenberch didn’t feature in Wednesday’s clash, their on-pitch relationship would be nothing but beneficial to their life in the dugout, if that ever came to fruition, of course.

Indeed, any sort of managerial job is miles away for Gravenberch at the moment, but with Van Dijk’s contract set to expire in summer 2027, who knows what could be around the corner for him.
