Did Liverpool make a mistake buying Alexander Isak and who could they have got instead?

Liverpool may have made a mistake by signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle in the summer transfer window.

Although the Sweden international has only had a few games where he’s been at full fitness, it still feels like the Reds should have seen a lot more from him.

Isak and Mohamed Salah haven’t played well together yet either, which is causing major issues for both players as neither have been at the races for Liverpool this term.

And, to make things worse, Isak has now injured his groin, and he could miss Liverpool’s next game or two, which will set back his fitness once again.

Alexander Isak needs to prove why Liverpool spent £125million on him this summer

Liverpool smashed the British transfer record fee to bring Isak in during the summer transfer window.

Although Newcastle said that they wouldn’t sell the striker for any price, in the end, it was too far gone for Isak and the Magpies, with Eddie Howe reluctantly accepting a bid worth £125 million for Isak.

At the time, most Liverpool fans were happy with this fee, especially since he was an out-and-out goalscorer and was arguably one of the Premier League’s best players last term.

And, even though his poor form at the start of his Liverpool career could be brushed over, the fact that he’s still not showing any signs of improvement is massively concerning.

To be fair to the Sweden international, he did put in a decent performance on Wednesday when used alongside Hugo Ekitike up top, but, due to his injury, Reds fans only got to see 45 minutes of that partnership.

It’s still unclear whether Isak will be available against Brentford, but if he is, Slot should stick with his new 4-4-2 formation and try the duo upfront together once again.

The other strikers that Liverpool could have signed in the summer transfer window

The summer transfer window was one that saw an obscene amount of money spent by Premier League clubs.

It was also one of the best-ever for the striker market with players such as Viktor Gyokeres, Isak, Ekitike, and Victor Osimhen on the move.

Although Liverpool signed two of the best prospects, it’s hard not to think about whether the Reds would have been better off signing someone such as Osimhen.

The Nigerian has got off to a flying start in Turkey as he’s bagged five goals in eight games.

He was also the difference-maker when Liverpool lost 1-0 against Galatasaray in the Champions League, as he kept his cool and netted a penalty.

Gyokeres was another option linked with a Liverpool move, but in the end, he chose to join Arsenal.

Of course, it’s still early in the season, and Isak’s form could end up turning around at any given moment, but for now, it feels like the Reds may have got the short end of the stick.
